THE OPEN STUDIO

EVERY SUNDAY FROM 1 TO 4 PM

Do you feel like boosting your creativity? Come to our Open Studio on Sundays from 1 to 4 pm!

Now in the Open Studio:

Tile wisdom

At Museum De Lakenhal, you will come across many tiles from the 17th century, such as the tiles in the interior of the Old Dutch Kitchen recreated at the museum. Those tiles depict people, animals, landscapes and motifs. Very common for that time, but now we would consider such a richly decorated wall quite extraordinary. The tiles, almost like a comic strip, reveal a lot of information about the time in which they were made. Often hand-drawn prints were the inspiration for the tiles. And now you choose a tile as inspiration for making your own etching.

Etching is an ancient intaglio printing technique. During etching, you use a printing plate in which small grooves hold the ink. Normally you etch with metal plate and acid, creating a chemical reaction. We have made it a little easier and safer for you: with the dry needle technique you can go a long way. Try it yourself!
